Witham is located in Essex, midway between Chelmsford and Colchester. There is a direct train service from London Liverpool Street Station and excellent road links. Standing on the River Brain, Witham has a mixture of old and modern buildings, with a mainly linear town centre focused around the High Street and two shopping centres; the Newlands Shopping Centre and the Grove Centre. There are a range of small shops, national chains, restaurants and pubs. A famous one-time resident of the town was the author Dorothy L Sayers whose statue stands opposite the library, which is a short distance from the author's house. There are numerous leisure facilities including a skateboard park and a leisure centre with swimming pools. Discover the River Walk and find areas that are home to many birds, insects, fauna and flora. Witham is on the National Cycle Route 1. Annual events include Witham Open Gardens, a medieval fayre, a carnival and Witham International Puppet Festival.
