Maldon is a town on the Blackwater Estuary in Essex, renowned for Maldon Sea Salt which has been produced in the town since 1882. A statue of Byrhtnoth, the fierce Anglo Saxon warrior, and a specially commissioned tapestry commemorates the Battle of Maldon in AD991. The town also has a strong maritime history as evidenced in the belvedere feature on the rooftops on many buildings. St Mary’s Church, near The Hythe Quay, is known locally as the Mariner’s Church. The Quay is the residence of many Thames sailing barges and Heybridge Basin is used by leisure craft and is a favourite with visitors and walkers. The High Street has many shops and eateries, including a selection of tea shops and micro pubs selling local beers. The most striking building in the High Street is Moot Hall, the surviving fragment of a larger dwelling which has stood in some form since the early 15th century. Nearby there are also museums to explore. Promenade Park encompasses an ornamental lake, Splash Park, beach huts, sandpits, a galleon play ship, aerial zip-wire and picnic areas.
