Harwich is a town in Essex located on the North Sea coast. It is the UK's second busiest passenger ferry port, and a historically important port, providing sheltered anchorage for shipping through the ages. It is the place where the Mayflower ship was built and where its captain, Christopher Jones lived. The Old Town of Harwich is a conservation area containing many historic buildings. Discover the town by following its Maritime Heritage Trail. Visit Ha'penny Pier where you can watch river traffic and the cruise terminal downstream. From the pier, there is a ferry service to the other side of the river and pleasure cruises. The Mayflower Museum is also sited on the pier. Other local attractions include the Electric Palace, one of Britain’s first cinemas, and Redoubt Fort, dating back to the Napoleonic Wars. The old Radar Tower at Beacon Hill Fort was the first radar installation of the Second World War. Just south of the Old Town, Dovercourt provides a beach, coastal walks and small nature reserve.
