Halstead is a friendly market town in Essex, in the Colne Valley. Wool and weaving provided the traditional industries in the past and the surviving Townsford Mill, which straddles the River Colne, was built in 1788. The wide High Street is dominated by the 14th-century church of St Andrew, which was extensively renovated in the Victorian period, but retains much older decoration, including tomb monuments from the 14th century and earlier. The historic core of Halstead can be observed on a walk up the Market Hill and a river walk runs through the town from east to west. Public gardens were established in 1900 and are noted for their superb floral displays. The Antiques Centre in the town has thousands of interesting pieces, and is well worth a visit. Halstead has a library and an interesting town museum. Just outside the town is Broaks Wood, a popular area for walking. Nearby Moyns Park boasts a Grade I listed Elizabethan country house.
