Brightlingsea is a coastal town in Essex situated between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea at the mouth of the River Colne, on Brightlingsea Creek. It is a very popular yachting centre with the harbour and promenade bustling with activity. The town has a history of shipbuilding and seafaring, with the distinction of being the only Cinque Port outside Kent and Sussex. In the centre of the town is Jacob's Hall, reputedly the oldest timber-framed building in England, built during the 14th century. All Saints Church, which is sited on a hill, dates from c. 1250. Its impressive tower at 97 feet high is visible from 17 miles out to sea. A light was placed in the tower to guide fishing vessels home. The waters around Brightlingsea together with the sandy beaches provide a wonderful family day out. Western Promenade has lines of colourful beach huts, a skate park, swimming pool, boating lake, and paddling pool. Bateman's Tower is a local landmark by the sea and there are a number of lovely walks along the seawalls.
