Braintree is an ancient market town in north Essex, about 46 miles from London. The town has two main markets, on a Wednesday and a Saturday. They are based outside the Town Hall in Market Square, and also run along Bank Street and the High Street, which is mainly pedestrianised, with a large variety of shops, restaurants and bars. Freeport Braintree, on the outskirts of the town, has approximately 90 shops selling designer brands and boasts its own railway station. Braintree’s museum contains displays relating to the history of the town and the associated Warner Textile Archive contains the second largest collection of publicly owned textiles in the UK. Great Notley Country Park is home to a 1.2km play trail, Sky Ropes high ropes and great places to walk, cycle, fish, picnic and fly kites. The Braintree and Bocking Carnival takes place each June with a procession of floats through the town centre, finishing at Meadowside.
