Burwell is a large village in Cambridgeshire about ten miles north-east of Cambridge, on the south-eastern edge of the Fens. The village is located at the head of Burwell Lode, a man-made waterway which connects it with the River Cam. The Lode runs for over two miles, with a pleasant walking footpath alongside. Burwell is a fascinating village to walk and cycle around, with many historic attractions and sites of great natural beauty nearby. St Mary’s Church, dating from the fifteenth century, is a wonderful historical building. The village is also the site of an unfinished castle from the twelfth century, where now, only a dry moat remains. Burwell Museum and Windmill provides a family day out with lots of interesting activities. Devil’s Dyke, a protected Scheduled Ancient Monument and Site of Special Scientific Interest, is a defensive Anglo-Saxon earthwork that extends for over seven miles, with a vantage point on Galley Hill just south of Burwell.
