Horncastle is a market town in Lincolnshire, 17 miles east of the county town of Lincoln. Horncastle is located at the confluence of the Rivers Bain and Waring. Lying at the south-west foot of the Wolds and at the edge of the Fens, it is a bustling and attractive market town, renowned for its antique shops, with a fine heritage evident all around. There are some notable historic buildings, including the 12th century Church of St. Mary. Horncastle is a great place to stay and is a good base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Four miles from Horncastle is the village of Winceby. During the 1643 Battle of Winceby leader Oliver Cromwell was almost killed. Horncastle lies to the south of the Lincolnshire Wolds, a range of hills and designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the highest area of land in eastern England between Yorkshire and Kent. It is a popular place for walking, horse riding and cycling.
