Lyme Regis, known as the Pearl of Dorset, is situated on the English Channel coast. It is famous for its fossil-hunting opportunities and is part of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site which has rock outcrops providing a number of important fossil zones. Lyme Regis is full of delights for every visitor. There are quaint shopping streets, top class restaurants, pubs, friendly cafes and lots of shops offering fresh seafood. As well as the glorious sand and pebble beaches, there are numerous coastal paths and trails to discover, deep sea and mackerel fishing trips, windsurfing, rock pooling and crabbing, pleasure boat trips from the harbour and an excellent golf course. The kids can enjoy mini-golf, an amusement arcade, putting green and crazy golf. There is an annual Lyme Regis Fossil Festival in April, and the museum has excellent collections on local fossils, maritime history, memorabilia and the literary links to the town. The beautiful Cobb harbour is famous for its inclusion in the Jane Austen novel Persuasion and in John Fowles novel, and film version of The French Lieutenants Woman. A busy town calendar includes Lyme Lunge in January where locals run into the icy waters of the bay, a Jazz and Blues Festival in May, a boat Regatta in August and the annual town summer carnival which provides lots of fun!
